If you know someone who has memory loss there is one very important tip to remember. No guessing games, no quizzes about any topic. The worst thing you can do to a person with a bad memory is put them on the spot for an answer.
Try to be non confrontational and accept whatever answer you receive without judgement.
Here are a few beginning phrases that put an end to meaningful communication:
- "YOU REMEMBER ME I AM YOUR SON"
- "DID YOU FORGET?"
- "WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL ?" (OR ANYTHING ELSE)
- "DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN WE WENT TO THE __________?"
- "HOW MANY YEARS DID YOU WORK FOR _____________? "
You get the idea, don't make memory demands on a person who can't remember well, it's not nice and it never works out well.
