Important information to help communicate

If you know someone who has memory loss there is one very important tip to remember. No guessing games, no quizzes about any topic. The worst thing you can do to a person with a bad memory is put them on the spot for an answer.

Try to be non confrontational and accept whatever answer you receive without judgement.

Here are a few beginning phrases that put an end to meaningful communication:

  • "YOU REMEMBER ME I AM YOUR SON"
  • "DID YOU FORGET?"
  • "WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL ?" (OR ANYTHING ELSE)
  • "DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN WE WENT TO THE __________?"
  • "HOW MANY YEARS DID YOU WORK FOR _____________? "

You get the idea, don't make memory demands on a person who can't remember well, it's not nice and it never works out well.
